Geophysics/Seismic Site Class Code Updates
Presented by Rob Kramer, Terracon
Abstract:
As seismic provisions in ASCE/SEI 7-22 and the 2024 IBC place greater emphasis on site-specific ground-motion effects and expanded site-class categories, accurate characterization of near-surface soil conditions is becoming essential to structural design. This presentation will review the relevant code changes that increase reliance on measured shear-wave velocity metrics (e.g., average Vs to 100 ft, Vs100) for site classification and seismic design and show how those changes raise the value proposition for routine geophysical testing in geotechnical investigations. We will then discuss practical methods to determine Vs100 including active and passive surface-wave techniques (passive MASW, active MASW, ReMi), downhole and crosshole seismic, suspension logging, and seismic CPT/SCPT
